Tucker sets his sights on another classic record
A year after eclipsing Lloyd James' record of 173 for the highest individual score in Cup Match, Janeiro Tucker has his sights set on becoming the first batsman to complete three centuries in the summer classic.
Only Rupert Scotland, Arnold Manders, James and now Tucker have tallied two centuries in Cup Match.
But, apart from Tucker, the other three batsmen have since retired.
Coming to the crease at Wellington Oval last year with his team in some trouble at 81 for three, the Southampton Rangers skipper featured first in a record-breaking fifth wicket partnership (120) with captain Albert Steede and then was part of a 137-run stand for the second highest sixth wicket partnership with Richard Basden.
Out of Somerset's mammoth total of 430 for eight declared, Tucker blasted 186 to better James' record which had stood for 39 years.
"I know that they (public) are expecting even bigger things from me, but there is no pressure," said Tucker.
"I am just going out there to try to do whatever is required of me, but I wouldn't mind being the first batsman to score three centuries in Cup Match."
Tucker said he would also like to be the first Somerset batsman to score centuries at both Wellington Oval and Somerset Cricket Club.
Last year the hard-hitting middle order bat also broke Timmy Edwards' highest individual tally by a Somerset batsman (170 not out) posted in 1950, while in 1999 he became the first Somerset batsman to score a century at Wellington Oval.
To mark last year's memorable occasion, both Edwards and James strolled out to the crease to personally congratulate Tucker.
The dread-locked batsman also now tops the Cup Match batting averages with 62.75, and remains well on track to surpass Wendell Smith's record for the most runs (1,143) in the classic.
Smith took all of 35 innings to amass his total while Tucker has racked up 502 runs in just nine innings so far, while featuring in just five matches.
Tomorrow the all-rounder plays for the president's XI during the champions' final trial match at the club.
Somerset will host the historical 100th edition of Cup Match next Thursday and Friday at their club which is also celebrating its 100th year in existence.
