Tucker quits as captain

Janeiro Tucker has stepped down as national team skipper to ?focus more intently on his own game?, handing Irving Romaine the job for next month?s Stanford 20/20 tournament.

Tucker, who stood in brilliantly for the injured Clay Smith last summer during the ICC Trophy tournament in Ireland in which Bermuda qualified for next year?s World Cup, has temporarily moved away from the top job after a discussion with coach Gus Logie.

The mercurial batsman remains in the squad, however, with Romaine taking over the captaincy he was given during the 20-20 World Cricket Classic here earlier this year with veteran wicketkeeper Dean Minors holding on to the vice-captaincy role.

The 13-man squad for the multimillion dollar Stanford tournament, in which Bermuda take on Chris Gayle?s Jamaica on July 21, contains few other surprises with batsmen Treadwell Gibbons jr and Daniel Morgan dropped.

Fast bowlers Kevin Hurdle and Ryan Steede are away in England, with Stephen Outerbridge and Jekon Edness in Wales, but Stefan Kelly is back for the summer from school in England and takes his place in the team while firebrand quick George O?Brien also retains his place in the squad.

In keeping with the incredible sums of money ? at least $28 million ? being spent on the tournament, Texan billionaire Allen Stanford is actually flying the Bermuda team in just for the opening ceremony, an ?informal cocktail party?, two weeks before their match.

The whole team, at the organiser?s expense, will jet down for two days on July 9 before returning again on July 19 for their clash with the Jamaicans.

The team fly in two days before their game and out again the day after ? if they win, they will have to return the following week.

?We are fortunate in that we have been able to select a well balanced and competitive team who will be able to draw from, in particular, their recent experience during their tours to Trinidad and the UK, as well as from their successes at the 20/20 in April,? said chairman of selectors Arnold Manders.

?We are optimistic that Bermuda will have a positive impact on this new and exciting format of cricket.?

Regarding the captaincy change, he added: ?After a number of discussions between Gus Logie and Janeiro it was mutually agreed that Janeiro should relinquish the captaincy to enable him to focus more intensely on his own game.

?They both felt that his contribution to the team would be enhanced by his stepping down as captain at this time.?
