Veterans hold key as Police plan upset
After seizing the Premier Division scalps of Cleveland and Somerset to reach the final four in this season's Combined Knockout Cup competition, Police will attempt to regain the same giant-killing form when they take to St. John's Field today against holders Western Stars in the final of the Central Counties Cup.
Hoping they can again go "toe to toe" with Premier Division opponents, Police will pin their hopes on the broad shoulders of veterans Dennis Archer, Ferdinand Thorne and wicketkeeper/batsman Andrew Rawlins.
But they shouldn't expect any favours from a Stars unit who will be attempting to quickly wrap things up and book a date in the Champion of Champions finals.
Stars have already secured final berths in the Camel and Combined Knockout Cups and remain undefeated in all competitions so far.
However, that record will surely be put to the test tomorrow when they come up against resurgent league champions St.David's at Lord's in the Premier Division's top match.
While the rest of the league suffered wash-outs last weekend, St.David's were idle but now enjoy the luxury of having their match with Cleveland rescheduled for a later date.
And with that in mind, a victory over Stars tomorrow could prove pivotal in determining whether or not the Islanders can make a serious bid to retain their title.
Glenn Blakeney has been merciless with the bat, blasting his way to three centuries already this season while player/coach Clay Smith has continued to provide solid support. And it wouldn't come as any surprise if the previously injured Lionel Cann made an appearance in this all-important clash.
But Stars skipper Albert Steede and co. are no strangers to big-match situations and as always will be a difficult team to beat.
Meanwhile, second-placed Southampton make the long trek to Wellington Oval where they will be looking to keep pace with Stars by defeating Cleveland.
Last weekend, Rangers skipper Janeiro Tucker showed a devastating return to form as he blasted a century only to see his efforts negated by a downpour which brought a premature end to the proceedings.
In a mid-table contest tomorrow, Somerset play host to St.George's in a match that could swing either way.
Somerset were well poised at 184 for four against Bailey's Bay during their last outing before Mother Nature intervened, while their eastern counterparts had Flatts reeling at 113 for six in a match also eventually rained out.
A victory for either team tomorrow would be just the tonic as they bid to get back into contention heading into the second phase of the season.
Bailey's Bay, likewise, will hoping to finish the first half on a strong footing against Flatts at Sea Breeze Oval.
In the First Division, league leaders PHC find themselves up against an unpredictable Somerset Bridge squad at White Hill Field, while nearest rivals Warwick square off with Police at Police Field.
Social Club and Devonshire meet at St. John's Field.
