Bermudians clash in ITF semi-final

Ashley Brooks

A Bermudian will be in today's Open Girls' doubles final of the Bank of Bermuda ITF Junior Tournament.

The question is, who will it be?

Either Ashley Brooks or Caitlin Gordon will advance to tonight's championship match at the Tennis Stadium.

However, the joy of one player will be at the expense of the other as they square off against each other, with their respective partners, in their semi-final clash, the second match on Court Two today.

The doubles final will be the last of five matches on Court One and will follow the eagerly-awaited showdown for the Girls' Singles 18 and Under.

Brooks, paired with the impressive 18 and Under top seed Christy Striplin of the USA, is confident they can go all the way. Yesterday, the duo took out another American Ashley Finnegan and Arielle Von Strolley of Jamaica 6-2, 6-3 to reach the last four.

“I think I have a partner who is very strong overall which will help a lot. Seeing the competition in the doubles I think we could win it,” said Brooks last night.

The two came together after Brooks - incidentally trounced 6-1, 6-1 by Striplin in the singles' first round - watched the American at practice and decided to ask her to team up.

“I wanted to play doubles and I didn't have a partner so I picked her,” said the 15-year-old Bermudian.

The overseas-based player noted that victory in the doubles would mean a lot especially since she missed out in the singles.

Meanwhile, Gordon is understandably “nervous” about the match. Given the opposition's profiles, she and her partner, 14-year-old Analy Guzman of Guatemala, can certainly expect a tougher time than they did overcoming the local combination of Jacklyn Lambert and Jasmin Quinn 6-1, 6-2.

“We're up against the number one seed in the tournament and Ashley Brooks who is a very good player in Bermuda. I'm just hoping the match goes in our favour. You never know,” said Gordon, a student at Bermuda High School.

Whatever the outcome, she is pleased to have played in this inaugural event and thinks it will have a positive effect on her game.

“I've found the tournament to be a great experience though the opposition from overseas are very difficult and unbeatable for me at this stage.

“Though I am not where they are yet, I think I could be in the future,” said the 12-year-old optimistically.

It could be a very busy day for 15-year-old Striplin who will definitely play two matches and possibly three if she and Brooks reach the doubles final. She faces off against second seed and fellow American Ashley Finnegan in the 18 and Under Girls' singles final at 5 p.m.

Action gets underway at 11 a.m. with the 18 and Under Boys' singles semi-finals. Americans Billy Mertz and Maciek Sykut will lock horns on Court One while their countryman Dylan Arnould takes on Germany's Victor Schmid on Court Two.

There will also be semi-final fixtures for the Boys' and Girls' 14 and Under Singles and for the Open Boys' doubles.
