Rangers players given new reason to excel

Don't be surprised if players from Southampton Rangers are seen playing their hearts out and willingly going the extra mile over the course of this season.

After all, they have plenty of incentive.

Sponsors E&C Well Drilling have provided the Premier Division league leaders with an added boost to strive for excellence.

At the end of the season, the most outstanding player on the team will receive an airline ticket to Barbados to attend a Test match between the West Indies and England next year.

Deportment both on and off the field and overall practice attendance will also be taken into consideration in addition to excellence on the field of play.

E&C Well Drilling is owned and operated by former Southampton stalwarts Eldon and Cyril Raynor, who continue to give back to the sport in which they were once prominent.

The sponsors are currently overseeing restoration work on the practice wickets at Southampton Oval and have been involved with the club for many years.

Former Somerset Cup Match skipper John Tucker heads a special panel of judges who will decide - on a weekly basis - the team's most outstanding player with the eventual overall winner of the travel ticket to be officially announced at the end of the season.

"I think that this is a wonderful idea on E&C's behalf," said Tucker yesterday. "I think that this will motivate the players and E&C deserve a lot of praise . . . not just for Southampton Rangers but for the community also.

"We have formed a special committee who will make the final decision based on the performances of the players, their deportment both on and off the field and also in practice."

Bermuda Cricket Board yesterday announced new dates for rescheduled matches to be held.

June 21 will see a First Division contest between Social Club and Flatts while the former will take on Warwick on June 28 and IFP Leg Trappers on July 5.

The Board also announced new dates for last weekend's postponed Premier Division KO Cup matches. Southampton will meet PHC and Willow Cuts will take on Cleveland on June 28.
