St George’s take another step towards promotion

Jarreau Hayward, the St George’s player-coach

St George’s have all but wrapped up one of the two promotion spots after the third and fourth-placed teams, Vasco da Gama and Flanagan’s Onions both suffered losses yesterday.

St George’s beat St David’s 1-0 at Lord’s thanks to a goal by Anthony Smith the day before his seventeenth birthday. Smith, a second-half substitute. scored six minutes into added time.

Both teams had a player sent off, Oronde Bascome of St George’s in the 57th minute for foul and abusive language towards the referee and Nasage Richardson, of St David’s, was ejected in the 75th minute for a second booking.

The win, the eleventh in 13 matches for the leaders, puts them on 34 points, the most Onions can finish with from their remaining matches which includes two games in hand.

“We’re not looking too far into the future, we’re worrying about X-Roads [in the FA Cup] next week and after that we’ll see what happens,” coach Jarreau Hayward said

“We showed a lot of character and fought to the end. We were played a man down for a half-hour but still dominated possession and created a lot of chances.

“One of our youth players scored the winner, a huge moment for us. He scored two goals on Friday in an under-17 game, we put our faith him and he rewarded us with a great, late goal.”

Onions were beaten 2-0 by Hamilton Parish, who had the perfect response after having a point deducted and a fine imposed this week for fielding an ineligible player in their last two matches. Parish got first half goals from Romone Smith and Kneiko Richardson.

That result, combined with Vasco’s 6-0 defeat to Devonshire means that the two Colts are well positioned to clinch promotion with games to spare ahead of their clash on Saturday, February 29 at Wellington Oval.

By that time Devonshire Colts could be leading the table on goal difference as St George’s have a bye during the next round of league matches on February 23.

Chemari Henry led the rout with a hat-trick for Devonshire Colts, while Senoj Mitchell and Jahkeylo Burgess were also among the goals.

Vasco, play their game in hand next Sunday during the FA Cup quarter-finals against Onions at Bernard Park.

In yesterday’s other match, Wolves beat Ireland Rangers 2-1 at Garrison Field.
