So, say veterans, why not let him go?

The cricket transfer system needs to be overhauled and top all-rounder Dwayne (Sluggo) Leverock should be allowed to move on and play with a new club ? even at this late stage.

That?s the view of two former Bermuda senior national squad players Andre (Doc) Manders and Noel Gibbons.

The pair agreed that it is pointless to put the player through the agony he is experiencing while attempting to return to Western Stars after having an attempt to join Southampton Rangers turned down.

They reckon that Sluggo?s decision to withdraw an attempt to return clearly shows his frustration, with both agreeing that the Board should take the initiative and pave the way for him to move on with dignity and be allowed to join the ranks of any new team he so desires.

?It should be just like they do in football. That March 31 deadline for transfers in cricket is too early, guys are still playing football and undecided on what they want to do during the cricket season,? said Manders a former Western Stars stalwart who now plays with PHC.

?They should have another deadline, one put back just before the season starts and let the players pay for it themselves. If the clubs want to reimburse them then so be it.?

He added: ?This thing is just going on and on and it doesn?t look good.

?I support a move by the Board to clear him to play elsewhere, it just doesn?t make sense for him to sit out the whole season and do nothing.

?It seems that half the players want him and half don?t, they seem to feel that if he plays this season then he will leave next season which is possible.?

Gibbons, a former Bailey?s Bay stalwart who now plays with Atherstone Cricket Club in the Surrey League in England, also criticised the transfer system and called on the Board to clear Sluggo?s exit from Stars.

?The transfer system alone here is not good, a player should be allowed to go where he wants,? said Gibbons.

?It?s unfortunate for Sluggo that somebody at Southampton Rangers didn?t pay his fee in time, but the onus should be on the player to do it and recover the money from the club later if possible.

?I don?t see why Stars are calling all of these meetings, if he wants to play he should be allowed to and if he doesn?t want to stay there then a way should be found to give him his release.

?Actually the system is a bit on the strict side, we are dealing with an amateur sport and the transfer system doesn?t have to be a make-believe professional thing. If a guy wants to go somewhere a week before the season starts, he should be free to go.

?In the best interest of the sport and the player in particular the Board should ensure that all papers are correct when a player attempts to transfer. They are trying to act professionally, but there is no professionalism in it when you really look at it.?
