No sweat for Open top seeds
James Collieson and Andy Bray, favoured to meet in the singles final of the Heineken Open, barely worked up a sweat during their first round matches at the WER Joell Stadium yesterday
Collieson cruised past Naim Azhar 6-0, 6-1 while Bray beat Kevin Caza 6-1, 6-1.
The top seeds then combined as a team to breeze past Ben Lau and Paul York in doubles action 6-0, 6-0.
Meanwhile, 13-year-old Cayla Cross outduelled another teenager, 15-year-old Jacklyn Lambert, 7-6 (4), 6-3 in a match where both players found difficulty in holding their serve.
In the second set Cross was the first to hold serve in the sixth game when she took a 4-2 lead and Lambert held her serve for the first time in the seventh game to narrow the score to 3-4.
But that was the end of the battle as young Cross, with a bit of help from the erratic play of her opponent, ran off the next two games to take the match.
In another tight contest David Jenkins defeated Jacob Trott 6-1, 7-6 (5) just as Jenkins was preparing for a third set.
Trott made major mistakes at crucial points in the match. He led 5-4 and was serving for set-all but lost his serve at love.
He was then up 6-5 before again losing his serve and even in the tiebreak he led 5-2 before losing 7-5.
?I had resigned myself to another three-setter against him,? said Jenkins, ?because he was on the threshold throughout the second set, but he felt generous and I graciously accepted.?
Among the veterans Chris Bryan outlasted Larry Samuels in a marathon match, winning 6-4, 7-5, 6-4 after nearly three hours on court.
Play in the tournament continues today, starting at 12.00 noon and throughout this week with the finals scheduled for Saturday.
