Bermuda Garners help from Windies bowling legend
West Indian fast bowling great Joel Garner has remained in Bermuda after the conclusion of the 20-20 World Cricket Classic to assist with Bermuda?s national squad and junior programmes.
Garner, a 6ft 8ins giant who took 259 Test wickets in only 58 matches, was the manager of the West Indian team who won the Classic Plate competition on Saturday.
Garner follows in the footsteps of Lance Gibbs, Richie Richardson and Courtney Walsh in having agreed to assist national coach Gus Logie with his national team players in recent months.
His work with the bowlers is seen as especially key as Logie continues his quest to produce or uncover a local seam bowler capable of consistently troubling batsman at an international level ? arguably the side?s biggest weakness at present.
Meanwhile, Bermuda?s squad for the upcoming tour to Trinidad to play their first ever One Day Internationals looks set to be announced today, with the selectors meeting yesterday afternoon to discuss the make up of the squad and be briefed on any outstanding injuries.
The team leaves for Trinidad in exactly one week?s time.
Recuperating skipper Clay Smith is about two months away from full fitness and has provisionally set Bermuda?s month-long trip to Canada in August as his target for a return.
Lionel Cann was unable to play in the Classic final because of a tweaked groin but is expected to be fit for the trip, as is Kwame Tucker, who was forced to leave the field against the South Africans on Saturday after being struck on the wrist by a nasty short ball from Meyrick Pringle.
Who will captain the side in Smith?s absence will have presented an interesting dilemma for the selectors.
While Logie said before the tournament that Janeiro Tucker was only standing down as skipper just for last week to concentrate on regaining fitness and form after a month-long honeymoon in Europe, Irving Romaine?s impressive performance throughout the event might have caused the selectors to at least discuss the captaincy issue.
Bermuda have a warm up game against a combined Trinidad club XI on May 13 before taking on Canada on May 17 and Zimbabwe the following day.
The final of this mini-triangular tournament falls on Saturday, May 20.
