Stars to field new league team

Premier Division powerhouses Western Stars have applied to enter a team in the Commercial Cricket League this season.

Their application is expected to be rubber-stamped at the league?s annual meeting to be held next Wednesday at the Department of Community Affairs on the corner of Court and Front Streets starting at 6.45 p.m.

The league ended in turmoil last season when West Indian Association protested against an executive committee ruling that they should replay a knockout semi-final against North Village that was abandoned because of rain with the outcome in the balance.

WIA argued that they should have been declared winners of the match using the Duckworth/Lewis system ? a method not used by the league. Forties had already reached the final.

It is hoped to resolve the WIA-Village stalemate at next week?s AGM so that last year?s scheduled final can kick off the new season in early May, followed by the annual memorial game pitting 2004 league champions Jamaican Association against the knockout winners.

Seven teams competed in the league last season but there are question marks over the continued participation of two of them this year ? St. David?s and Devonshire Stars.

All clubs are urged to send a representative to the AGM.
