Swan remembered as hundreds turn out for fundraiser
Hundreds turned up at St.John?s Field on Saturday to support the inaugural Randy Swan Memorial Day and Scholarship Fund.
On a glorious afternoon of sunshine, family, friends and Dandy Town team-mates gathered to reflect and donate to the new fund named in memory of the late Hornets player, killed in a traffic accident last December.
?The turnout from the community exceeded all expectations and it was a joyous family fun day based on community spirit to remember Randy the way he was . . . full of life and energy,? stated Western Stars Sports Club president Cal Blankendal.
Following a friendly kick-a-about pitting Hornets against Dandy Town Roots, Swan?s number 16 jersey was officially retired during a moving ceremony.
That contest saw youth prevail over experience as Hornets ran out 5-1 victors over the original ?who laid the foundation for the club?s current crop of Premier Division players.
Blankendal continued: ?Everyone lined up for a moment of silence and the ringing of the bell and it was just a fun-filled day and the public turned out in large numbers and supported the event by making donations.?
Over $5,000 was raised during the event and that total is expected to increase as pledge sheets currently in circulation aren?t due to be returned until the end of the month.
Adding to the occasion, Town?s Under-11 team clinched the St.David?s Under-11 Tournament at Lord?s earlier in the day to set the tone for the afternoon?s events.
Plaques were presented to Swan?s family members and the club before the late player?s jersey was permanently retired.
?It was hoisted and then passed around,? added Blankendal. ?Now we intend to have it framed and mounted in the clubhouse next to his photo.?
Meanwhile, on the same day perennial rivals Somerset and St.George?s finished all square at 1-1 in their 11th annual Over 40s All-Stars match at Garrison Field.
Though bragging would eventually be shared, fans were treated to two superbly taken goals from the lethal left feet of two of the Island?s former top strikers.
Former Somerset Trojans winger Dwayne (Tricks) Richardson put the West Enders ahead on the half hour with a gem of a goal from 30 yards while former St.George?s and Devonshire Colts forward Stevie Dickinson equalised five minutes from time.
It was the second year in succession the two rivals finished all tied up following last year?s exciting 3-3 draw at Somerset Cricket Club.
?It was a beautiful day and everyone enjoyed themselves,? said former Trojan and Bermuda international Larry (Muscles) Hunt.
