Adam Hall may not be a household name just yet but all of that is quickly changing.

Canada regard the talented young baseball player as one of their own, but Bermuda can lay claim to him, too, after all he was born here in 1999 to a Bermudian mother, the former Helen Outerbridge, and Canadian father, Tyler Hall, both former teachers on the island.

Adam spent his early years in Bermuda and grew up playing baseball in the YAO baseball programme where his love of the game developed. He played initially in the Rookie League under coach Phil Ray before being given the opportunity to hone his skills by competing with older players by the late Tom MacNeil.

Direction and guidance was given by a number of coaches and mentors in Bermuda, and the support from the Bermuda Government’s National Junior Athletic Sponsorship programme for two years was invaluable, his family stressed. The baseball community in Bermuda also continues to be a great source of support for the youngster, now 17.

To further his baseball development, Hall’s parents made the decision to relocate to Canada in 2011 when he was 12. Things have been happening quickly for him over the past five years, with the Canadian junior national team infielder now set to join a growing list of Canadians to play in the prestigious Under Armour All-American game next Saturday at Wrigley Field in Chicago.

The American v National team game brings together the top 40 high school players in the United States and Canada, with Hall the lone Canadian chosen.

“I’m really looking forward to the entire experience in Chicago and sharing the field with some of the best high school baseball players,” Hall, a former Saltus student, said. “It’s an honour to be chosen to participate in the game and I’m excited to represent Canada.”

The Under Armour All-America game is part of the four-day event, providing players with a once-in-a-lifetime baseball experience. The premier players will work with a coaching staff that includes some of the game’s best former players such as Bill Ripken, Wes Helms, Tim Hudson and Eric Milton.

During the week, athletes will participate in a formal workout in front of Major League Baseball scouts, and participate in a home run derby.

Since the game’s inception in 2008, 71 Under Armour All-Americans have been selected in the first round of the MLB Draft.

Thirty-eight former All-Americans were selected in total this year, including 11 first round picks, bringing the overall number since the start of the Under Armour All-America game to 250 selections.

Hall is set to become the tenth Canadian to participate in the game, joining the late Jake Eliopoulos (2008), Kellin Deglan (2009), Evan Rutckyj (2009), Skylar Janisse (2010), Ryan Kellogg (2011), Gareth Morgan (2011), Josh Naylor (2014), Demi Orimoloye (2014) and Andy Yerzy (2015). All of those players played with Baseball Canada’s Junior National team programme at one time.

Last year, Yerzy, who was selected 52nd overall by the Arizona Diamondbacks earlier this month in the MLB first-year player draft, homered in the All-America Game at Wrigley Field and was presented with the Most Valuable Player award following the game.

Hall joined the junior national team programme in October 2014 for the annual Fall Instructional League Camp and last summer represented Canada at the WBSC U-18 Baseball World Cup in Japan.

He just returned from Havana with the junior national team, who played in the nine-game Cuba Summer Series. Now he has been named to the East roster for the Perfect Game All-American Classic that will take place on August 14 at Petco Park in San Diego.

“What can I say, it’s just an honour to be selected with all of these great players,” Hall said. “I think the biggest thing is just to enjoy these experiences as much as possible and try and become a better baseball player because of it.”

Just like the Under Armour All-America Game, Hall was the only Canadian named to the Perfect Game All-American Classic rosters.

“As far as being the only Canadian selected it takes on greater meaning because I get to represent my country which I’m really proud of,” he said.

The teenager will join junior national team players Gareth Morgan (2013) and Josh Naylor (2014) as the only Canadians to have participated in the contest that has been in existence since 2003 when it was known as the Aflac All-American Classic.

Notable alumni include former first overall picks Justin Upton, Bryce Harper and Gerrit Cole, along with current MLB stars Andrew McCutchen, Buster Posey, Kris Bryant and Madison Bumgarner.

Hall led the squad in hitting during the Cuba Summer Series with a .333 batting average, one double, one triple, one home run, six RBI and four stolen bases in eight games.

He is committed to Texas A & M University for the 2018 season, but is also keeping his options open as he works his way towards consideration in the June 2017 MLB draft for which he will be eligible upon graduation from high school.
