Bermuda trio receive an All-Star thrill
Major Indoor Soccer League player David Bascome gave a trio of locals one of their "greatest moments in sports" last weekend.
For Mark (Burger) Jennings, Wendell (Woolly) Baxter and Reggie Lowe, their trip to the MISL All-Star game in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, was well worth the effort despite the chilly weather.
Jennings seized the opportunity of watching the Harrisburg Heat veteran play in his fourth All-Star game to present him with a poster size photo of the player, signed by several well-wishers from Bermuda, including Sports Minister Randy Horton.
"I can honestly say that I had one of the best weekends of my life, everything went fine and as expected David was quite appreciative of the signed poster," said Jennings.
The weekend All-Star programme started off with the Commissioner's Ball on Saturday when Bascome was presented with the poster.
"This was a very special moment. We did this in front off all of the invited guests at the ball, I'm talking about 600 people. Then we went to an indoor arena to see David perform in the skills competition which was well organised," added Jennings.
"Naturally, David did well. The players are judged in areas such as dribbling, juggling and shooting. All of this took place following a similar skills competition featuring youths which was also well attended and mainly designed for the players and coaches to meet MISL officials and major sponsors of the All-Star classic."
More highlights followed at the game itself on Sunday,
"As the players were introduced, the Bradley Centre was in darkness except for the spotlight being focused on the tunnel that the players emerged from," explained Jennings. "It was simply awesome to see number 40 (Bascome) run into the arena and hear his name being called.
"The noise level was out of this world, I was amazed to see such a huge crowd of 8,000 respond this way. This was prime-time stuff and my heart was missing a beat."
Jennings said he got a surprise on returning to his hotel to find Bascome and former international goalkeeper Shep Messing waiting to greet him. "It was a trip I will long remember," he said.
