Perozzi: ?I deserved win?
Teresa Perozzi is planning three more fights this year ? and hopes not to find as bad a loser as Elizabeth Kerin.
Perozzi comfortably won a points decision at Fight Night on Saturday against Chicago fighter Kerin, a result which was backed by the fans and was re-confirmed this week by experienced judge Vic Richmond.
But Kerin?s post-fight outburst, and the comments of her trainer George Hernandez, upset Perozzi who, having now watched a tape of the bout, is even more certain that victory was deservedly hers.
?My girl won that fight, it is obvious to anyone who knows anything about boxing,? said Hernandez after the 40-36, 40-36, 40-37 decision went Perozzi?s way to improve her record to 2-1.
?Your girl is going nowhere, put your money somewhere else because you are wasting it on her. Everyone involved in this decision should be ashamed by what has happened here tonight.?
Perozzi, who herself was ruled against by two of the three judges from Saturday when she lost to world number four Monica Nunez last year at CedarBridge Academy, was keen to defend herself.
?I was happy I won that fight ? particularly after seeing it again on tape,? said the 31-year-old Perozzi, the Island?s only pro fighter.
?I was very surprised when I picked up on Monday and saw all those comments. It was unfair to call it a hometown decision when those same judges gave the decision to Monica in the fight last year.
?I think Elizabeth over-reacted quite a lot and I think the trainer was out of order.
?It is one thing being upset with the judges, it is another criticising me and saying I am a waste of money. I beat that girl fair and square and I?d love to get him in the ring to set the record straight.
?I am not going to let any of this faze me, I know what I can do and I am going to go and do it.?
And what Perozzi is going to do is go to Vegas for the all-female weekly bouts and try and push herself up the super middleweight rankings.
Her plan is a trip to Nevada in May, potentially a re-match with Nunez here in July and then another Vegas trip before the end of the year ? and maybe next year a drop in weight class.
?After winning this last fight, I am ready to keep going and keep winning,? she continued.
?I was really pleased with myself on Saturday. I still didn?t throw as many punches as I wanted but I felt I always kept myself busy, I didn?t lean back as much, there was no wild punching and I never kept still.
?I know what I am capable of and Vegas is the place to go for it.?
And wherever it is Perozzi goes, it is likely that it will be with a different corner.
The association with Allan (Forty) Rego appears to be over with Perozzi now fighting with Chuck Renaud as her second.
?I want to go on the record and say a few things because there has been a bit of mud-slinging about what has happened with Forty and me,? said Perozzi with the ferocity of one of her hooks.
?When I started my boxing training again in January I went to Forty but there was no-one to spar with there. I tried the Police gym and I had the same problem but Chuck was keen to have me and find me sparring partners.
?I had been working with Troy Darrell but he said he could only help me two days a week because of family and work commitments and said I might be better off elsewhere.
?So that?s what happened. Nearer Fight Night I asked Forty to be in my corner and he demanded $500 and I only want people with me who are with me for the right reasons ? not for money.
?Troy said he couldn?t do the corner because of his relationship with Forty. He said he had done all he could to help me prepare for the fight and perhaps I would be better with someone else.
?I was pleased to work with Chuck on the night and will be happy to do so in the future.?
And no doubt Renaud will also be happy, particularly with Perozzi looking to be on the way up.
