Village and PHC in Friendship test
North Village will be gunning for a fourth cup final appearance of the season tonight at Somerset Cricket Club.
Having clinched Martonmere and Charity Cup titles last fall and already through to next month?s FA Cup final, the Reds face off against PHC Zebras in a match to decide Devonshire Cougars? opponents in next month?s Friendship Trophy final.
And the Reds will be firing on all cylinders when they take to the pitch having been bolstered by the return of inspirational players Damon Edwards, Kentoine Jennings and Nakia Smith.
Village captain Ralph Bean Jr was due to have a late fitness test last night. Bean limped off injured during Village?s 1-0 FA Cup semi-final win over Zebras last month at Wellington Oval where they advanced to a fifth FA Cup final in six seasons.
And Reds coach Jennings expects tonight?s cup clash to be just as tough against a fiery Zebras attack.
?We?ve had some very physical and fast paced matches with PHC this season,? he noted. ?I think PHC are going to come out looking for revenge for last month?s FA Cup loss and so I anticipate another high intensity match.?
Tonight?s clash will be a repeat of the 2002 Friendship Trophy final which saw Zebras run out 3-2 victors to deny Village ? wearing their now infamous grey jerseys ? what would have been a first triple crown championship (Premier Division, FA Cup and Friendship Trophy) haul since 1978.
Vasco da Gama were the last local club to achieve the coveted triple crown in 1998.
Days after ousting Zebras from the FA Cup, Village had their own bubble deflated in the form of a 3-1 league loss to Devonshire Cougars late last month.
But Jennings reckons mistakes of the past are just that ? a thing of the past.
?We really had a discussion about that loss. I really let the players know how I felt about their attitudes and overall approach and commitment,? said Jennings.
?Since then they have shown more commitment and are training hard and so I?m looking forward to tomorrow?s game just to see how the players react. But the last week in training has been pretty good.?
Zebras have defeated Village on two occasions this season and they will be out tonight to avenge last month?s FA Cup loss which denied them what would have been an unprecedented 18th FA Cup final appearance and a shot at moving ahead of Somerset Trojans in the race to become the first team ever to clinch ten triumphs in the competition.
Trojans were also denied that distinction last Sunday when they suffered an embarrassing loss to First Division Hamilton Parish.
Tonight?s Friendship Trophy match will be preceded by the First Division Shield semi-final featuring St.David?s and 1988 winners Devonshire Colts.
