Kyle hits winner

After failing to score at all in 2003 before last week's strike in the 1-1 draw with Bristol Rovers, Kyle Lightbourne made it two goals in two games on Saturday.

The Bermudian striker hit Macclesfield's second goal in the 2-1 Third Division victory over Southend United.

David Eaton had put the Silkmen ahead in the 69th minute and Lightbourne doubled the advantage in the 80th, slotting home past Shrimpers' `keeper Daryl Flahavan.

There was panic in the final minute when substitute Neil Jenkins fired home a close range volley for Southend, but Macclesfield hung on for a win that moves them to 21st place out of 24 teams. The bottom two will be relegated at the end of the season.

"It's always tense out there in our situation but when you are cruising at 2-0 and then concede late you tend to get the feeling of `Oh no, not again' but there were so many terrific performances out there today," said Macclesfield boss Dave Moss. "I didn't want to make any substitutions as I felt they were all in the game and I have faith in the fitness of all my players. I certainly didn't want to take Kyle off the pitch as his defensive work when we are under the cosh is vital and I'm delighted that he managed another one at the other end of the pitch as well."

Shaun Goater came off the bench but could not dig Manchester City out of a hole on Saturday, the Blues going down 1-0 at Blackburn in the Premiership.

Goater came on with eight minutes remaining for Gerard Wiekens but he was unable to respond to David Dunn's 13th minute strike for Rovers.
