Goal-happy Swallows complete double
Swallows sealed a weekend double over Cardinals in the Bermuda Hockey Federation's Women's A League.
The make-up games played on Saturday and Sunday saw Swallows win 4-0 and 5-1 respectively.
Liz Osborne, Jenny Burrell (two) and Rebecca Pettingill scored the goals in the first rout.
Osborne struck first from a penalty corner but Swallows needed 'keeper Nicola Wilkinson to be on top of her game to maintain their advantage shortly after. Awarded a penalty stroke of their own, Cardinals fired in a shot but Wilkinson was equal to it.
Cardinals were made to pay for their miss when Burrell netted just before half-time after pouncing on Cath Griffiths' initial effort.
Pettingill made it 3-0 in the second half when she fired a powerful shot past the 'keeper from a set piece routine.
Burrell then grabbed her double when she intercepted a free hit from Cardinals and casually slipped the ball between the 'keeper's legs.
The second match was as one-sided as the first, Sam De Putron (two), Pettingill, Cath Griffiths and Jenny McIntosh all scoring for Swallows.
Du Putron got them off to a flying start with two goals in quick succession. Finding herself on the left post she slotted home to give her side an advantage they would never lose.
Cardinals did pull a goal back before half-time following a goalmouth scramble but Swallows picked up the pace again in the second period.
Pettingill got the third goal from set piece and some great attacking play between Kirstie Kelly and Griffiths enabled the latter to bag the fourth.
The fifth and final goal came late in the game when a powerful McIntosh shot was deflected into the goal by a defender.
In the Women's B League, Police Orioles saw off a weakened Canaries 1-0. Canaries had only eight players at the start of the match and Police made the most of their numerical advantage to score from a penalty corner in the first half.
As the game went on Canaries found another two players and although they poured forward, the Police defence held firm.
The much-anticipated clash between Swallows and Cardinals - the two top B League teams - ended in a goalless draw.
Gayle Thorne, in goal for Cardinals, made some excellent saves to deny the Swallows' attackers.
The two sides are scheduled to meet once more in what could prove to be the title decider.
Ravens and Police Orioles played out another goalless draw in a game that saw the former try out a new defensive strategy with five players in midfield and only one up front.
Jackie McRonald, in particular, caught the eye in the left back role. Ravens were unlucky not to score themselves with a good effort from Katie-Jane Orton.
In the Men's League the runaway express known as Chameleons nearly derailed against a determined Upstarts team.
Upstarts began well, and took the lead through Daly after a bullet pass from Fyfe put him in the clear.
Chameleons huffed and puffed and sometimes strayed across the line in pursuit of the equaliser - Rob Bicknell's sending off being the worst offence.
But when the going gets tough, the tough get going and two goals from Jonathan Dodd, including a dramatic flick deflection, kept the winning streak intact.
