HARNESS RACING

Another large following was on hand on Saturday night to witness harness racing in damp conditions at the Vesey Street track.

As the winter season draws to a close, competitors are preparing for the season-ending Champion of Champions meet.

So far 24 ponies have recorded a time of 1.10 or better, illustrating the high calibre of racing ponies currently on the local circuit.

The nine fastest times will go into the season finale, and with four races remaining, points are at a premium.

Samantha Hayward has emerged as a prime contender for overall driving honours.

She recorded four more wins, two each with Eddie the Great and Abby Dabby Doo, and also two fourths with JR Meteau Design.

Enio Viera and Shamrock Marla remained unbeaten, collecting two more wins.

Maja Nightrain picked up his first win for new owner/driver Anthony Rego. Lyndia's Dream, driven by Bobby DeGraff, won the A division of the 1.09.2-1.11.2 time bar in a blistering 1.09.1 and she now has one leg out. She also won the second heat in 1.11.2, just ahead of Diamondway (Joe Viera) who finished in 1.11.3.

Rookie drivers David Sousa (Grand Magic), Jason Lopes (LA Pocket Rocket) and Catrina Adcock (Bowtie's Pocketwatch) each added another win to their season.

In what is fast becoming a familiarity, Eddie Roque's Tuxedo's Bowtie turned in the night's quickest time to win the free-for-all in 1.05.4.

Racing is also scheduled for this Saturday night, starting at 6.30.
