Coral Beats to show off skills on Brazil tour

An all-women percussion band today headed for the home of samba for a two-week tour.Coral Beats will perform alongside bands from Brazil in a series of performances, including a pre-carnival event in Olinda.Sue Riihiluoma, the band leader, said: “This has long been a dream of mine, to travel around Brazil, the home of samba reggae, where we can learn new material and techniques to add to and perfect our repertoire.” They will also visit Rio de Janeiro, Salvador and Recife.Nineteen of the 33 members of Coral Beats will take part in the tour.Coral Beats, formed three years ago, has performed for the Bermuda Triangle Challenge and in the Pride Parade, the opening of the Bermuda Festival, International Women’s Day, the Bermuda International Film Festival, Queen’s Birthday celebrations at Government House, a TED Talk and at several conferences and private parties.Gwen Cantarella, who organised the trip, said: “Logistics have taken over a year with a lot of co-ordination but everything has been finalised and everyone is very excited.”
