The Brown vendetta: when will it stop?

Trevor Moniz, the former Attorney-General (File photograph by Akil Simmons)

Dear Sir,

While in office, Trevor Moniz and the One Bermuda Alliance government pursued a political vendetta against Ewart Brown. They went after his business and tried to destroy his reputation.

The OBA went against the advice of technical officers and mandated radical fee reductions in MRI and CT scans that nearly put the Brown-Darrell Clinic out of business and slashed revenue at the Bermuda Hospitals Board.

The Government was forced to compensate Dr Brown for more than $1 million as a result of the OBA attacking his business and ignoring the advice of its technical officers.

The OBA and Mr Moniz attacked Dr Brown’s business and reputation with outlandish and unfounded allegations that were dismissed in court. This attack on his business and reputation cost Bermudian taxpayers millions, jeopardised Bermuda’s longstanding relationship with Lahey Clinic and threatened our reputation as a jurisdiction.

The OBA’s political vendetta has cost Bermuda millions of dollars and threatened our reputation.

The case filed by Dr Brown against the Government is a direct result of the unethical political vendetta waged by the OBA — while the present government strongly opposed the OBA’s political vendetta, just like Morgan’s Point, we and the Bermudian taxpayer will have to suffer the consequences from the OBA’s time in office.

As of July 2019, taxpayers have spent close to $5 million in relation to this case. That figure does not include legal fees. In March of 2018, the legal fees surpassed $1 million.

We are now in a new decade. Taking into account continued expenditures, the costs now exceed $7 million. We cannot afford to continue throwing good money after bad.
