Furbert to turn critical spotlight on PLP record
United Bermuda Party Leader Wayne Furbert will launch a stinging critique on the PLP's record in office during today's Reply to the Throne Speech.
Last week Government unveiled its plans for the coming year with training and housing key among them.
But Mr. Furbert said Government had not done enough in its eight years in power.
He said: "The PLP record in office is more about failure than success. We see it as a broken government.
"Time and again they have shown they have not figured out how to make government work for the benefit of the people."
He said poor performance by individual ministers and a lack of unity had led to the rot.
"As a result of these failures, Bermudians are looking for a government that is competent, trustworthy and dedicated to meeting the needs of the people.
"They want to know that there is something out there that is better, something that says to them: 'We've got your back.'
"Our Reply to the Throne Speech will tell them that. I believe it will tell them the United Bermuda Party is offering something better.
The Opposition plans to spell out how they will:
Break the back of the housing crisis
Reform public education
Ease the pressures on senior citizens
Return safety to streets and neighbourhoods
Help those in need; and
Create economic opportunity.
Mr. Furbert added: "I will also spell out our plan to take our democracy to a new level through reforms that will provide Bermuda with better, more responsive and accountable government for generations to come.
"The past eight years has been the era of broken government. It's time to fix it."
Today's debate is expected to wrap up around 8 p.m.
