Muslims confront Island?s social woes

Members of Bermuda's 500-strong Muslim community are becomingly increasingly vocal through a sense of duty to address the Island's social problems.

According to Takbir Sharrieff, who converted to Islam in 1972 and is one of the founders of the new Muslim and Christian citizens' organisation Bermudians Against Narcotics (BAN), it is important for his community to speak out.

"I think in the past we have been a private group of people but now we see a need to enter into the society in terms of politics and economics," he said.

"We are citizens of the Island and engage in many activities. I am quite excited about the fact that we have decided to step out as a strong and united community, as to not make a contribution would be a sin."

Mr. Sharrieff, 62, who is a former Police Sergeant and the brother of Progressive Labour Party MP Wayne Perinchief, added: "If Bermuda is to move forward from 2005 we must have considerations for all sections of society.

"Islam is the fastest growing religion in the world. We are not asking for converts but for people to work with us on the things that are important. That's why Muslims in Bermuda are speaking out on drugs and alcohol and youth problems."
