Passengers angry after stormy cruise
Cruise ship passengers are rocking the boat after officials insisted a storm encountered by the while en route from Bermuda to Boston resulted in just minor damage and only one injury.
Passengers told the Boston Herald this weekend that the Coast Guard downplayed the severity of the storm, even adding rumours that one person died during the passage.
According to the Coast Guard, the 680-foot cruise ship hit a storm with swells of up to 20 feet on the trip back to Boston during its October 17-24 cruise. One man was injured when two windows shattered on the fifth deck. A Norwegian Cruise Lines spokesperson said the windows were shattered by a gangplank, not the weather.
Though admittedly ?very uncomfortable? for passengers, the Coast Guard insisted the ship was never in danger of capsizing or sinking.
Passengers, however, voiced their anger at Coast Guard comments. The injuries also included an adolescent boy whose arm was broken, they told the Herald, and at least two passengers added they believed another passenger was killed.
Passengers were summoned to lifeboats, but then told to return to their cabins.
The Coast Guard said the ship was able to turn away from the sea long enough to seal the shattered window.
Some passengers are trying to get their money back, claiming the ship never should have left the Island with the storm coming. was unable to contact the cruise line?s shipping agents, Meyer Shipping, last night.
Norwegian Cruise Lines has declined to comment, and no reference to the incident appeared to have been made on the company?s website by last night.
