PLP gets into gear for annual party conference

Progressive Labour Party branches are in the throes of picking delegates for its next annual conference in two weeks.

Michael Misick, Chief Minister of the Turks and Caicos Islands (TCI), has been chosen as the keynote speaker at the banquet which caps the historic conference on November 1.

The week long conference begins on Monday October 27 and includes a round table discussion, to which the public will be invited, on October 29.

"It will be the first conference organised under the new single seat districts," said Walter Roban, acting spokesperson for the party.

"The fact that we have new branches and new members who are participating means there will be new people attending the conference for the first time. It will be a new and exciting conference with a lot of these new features."

Mr. Misick has been a TCI legislator since 1991 when he was also appointed Tourism, Transportation and Communication Minister.

In March last year he was elected Leader of the Opposition PNP which won six out of 13 seats in the General Election the following month.

Subsequent by-elections returned results which allowed Mr. Misick to form the Government and he was sworn in as Chief Minister in mid August.

Mr. Misick also serves as Minister of Development, Tourism, Natural Resources and District Administration.

"We vetted a list of a number of possible speakers and Mr. Misick who is a friend of some members of Cabinet, including Deputy Leader Ewart Brown and others was invited to speak. We like to each year have a new and different speaker," said Senator Roban.

Party chairman Neville Tyrrell said that the party will have to decide on a public relations officer, as the former substantive holder, Glenn Blakeney, and Senator Roban are now legislators.
