Red Cross launches Haiti crisis appeal
The Red Cross has launched an appeal for $3.3 million to help more than 40,000 people in Haiti who were affected by tropical storm Jeanne.
Torrential rains have caused massive flooding and landslides in northern parts of the country, killing more than 1,000 people and leaving thousands homeless.
The storm has destroyed roads, crops, and homes and the death toll is expected to rise as more bodies are found in the flood waters, according to a press release.
Volunteers from the Red Cross participated in rescue operations and distribution of food, water, and emergency stocks of relief funds.
The Bermuda Red Cross said that there is an urgent need for food, drinking water, blankets, and plastic sheeting.
At least five planes from different countries are expected to deliver over 60 tonnes of relief materials to Haiti over the next few days. Some planes have already delivered necessary materials to Haiti.
The Bermuda Red Cross is asking the public to either mail cheques to headquarters on 9 Berry Hill Road, Paget, or drop by the office with debit/credit cards. They are also accepting debit/credit card numbers over the phone. Cheques should be made out to Haiti Floods.
All money received will be sent to the International Federation for distribution to the Haiti Red Cross.
The Red Cross also said it had closed the appeal for the Beslan School Tragedy in Russia. The international appeal reached its goal just after it opened.
Locals donated $4,365 that was sent to the British Red Cross for distribution, according to a press release.
