Hurricane Jeanne a potential threat to Bermuda
Hurricane Jeanne has become a potential threat to Bermuda ? but weather forecasters are not predicting any danger, saying Bermudians ?just need to be mindful it is out there?.
Storm systems automatically become labelled as ?potential threats? when they come within a radius of 400 nautical miles of Bermuda. Jeanne?s closest point of approach to Bermuda, in the next 72 hours, is currently predicted at 3 a.m. tomorrow, when the storm will be 365 nautical miles to Bermuda?s south-west.
?But this system is different because it?s hanging out down there,? meteorologist Kimberley Zuill said last night. The category one hurricane, with winds of 75 knots gusting to 90, was located at 27.4 degrees north and 71.2 degrees west at 6 p.m. last night.
It was moving at only about four miles per hour, and was forecast to continue hovering within the same area of open ocean. ?It?s not as though it?s moving in our direction.?
Despite being 450 nautical miles to our south-west last night, Jeanne is already affecting Bermuda?s weather. The clouds covering Bermuda yesterday extended all the way down the Atlantic to where the system was churning.
Neither Hurricane Karl nor Tropical Storm Lisa were forecast as a potential threat to Bermuda last night. Karl was predicted to pass well east of the Island, while Lisa was predicted to remain even further to the south-east.
