Tropical Storm Debby ?not a threat?
Tropical Storm Debby was last night described as ?not a threat to Bermuda at this time.?
According to forecasts from the National Hurricane Centre in Miami, Debby has a 25 percent chance of becoming a hurricane by the weekend.
Last night it was upgraded from a depression to a tropical storm with sustained winds of up to 45 knots.
Hurricane-strength winds are classified as 74 mph or above.
Yesterday while still a depression it skirted the Cape Verde islands and by 6 p.m. was 2,295 nautical miles east southeast of Bermuda. Reuters news agency quoted National Hurricane Centre forecaster Jamie Rhome as saying there was tremendous uncertainty over forecasting storms.
Declan O?Connell of the Bermuda Weather Service also stressed that despite maps showing the system heading towards the Island, it will only be viewed as a potential threat when it is within 400 nautical miles.
It is still expected to be 1,188 nautical miles to the east-southeast by Friday.
