Pembroke South East: DeVent rolls to easy win

It might be said that a "Fox" was sent into the lion's den of Pembroke South East last night when the PLP's Ashfield DeVent defeated Lawrence "Rocky" Fox.

Mr. DeVent, who won more than 70 percent of the votes with 551 counted in his favour, was not surprised by his victory.

But he commended the United Bermuda Party's candidate Mr. Fox for his "bravery" and encouraged him to continue his political efforts.

"(The results) were not a surprise, particularly since I was just elected in November and I defeated a sitting senator," said Mr. DeVent. "There's been tremendous support, and I've worked pretty hard."

"But I'd like to encourage Mr. Fox to continue - I like to see young people involved although I don't agree with his choice of political party."

"He's a brave man. It wasn't easy to come from St. David's and run here, and I would have to think long and hard before I would go to St. David's to run," Mr. DeVent added.

Thirty-two-year-old Mr. Fox won a total of 227 votes, about 29 percent of the vote.

He remained optimistic despite his defeat, and said the political process was a good learning experience for him.

"I've gained valuable experience, and this gave me the opportunity to do some soul-searching," said Mr. Fox.

"I've decided this is something I want to do in the long term, so this won't be the last you see from a future leader," said the first-time candidate.

There was one spoiled ballot and five rejected ballots. A total of 783 people cast ballots, and voter turnout was approximately 66 percent.
