Warwick South East: PLP veteran Scott returned to the House

Progressive Labour Party candidate Alex Scott last night swept to victory with 462 votes in Warwick South East, with his opponent United Bermuda Party candidate Bob Richards receiving 366 votes.

"I am very elated and am equally elated that the PLP is going to form the next Government," the Works and Engineering Minister said last night.

He had special praise for his campaign team to whom he said he was indebted.

And he also acknowledged a great debt to voters who supported him despite his inability to canvass due to illness.

"The voters came through for me. I will get around to see all of them and thank them for their support."

He added that his return to the House would "confirm the representation that they (the residents of Warwick South East) have received from the PLP for the past ten to 12 years".

And he emphasised that this support would not be taken for granted.

"There is a need to form community cells so that people can get in touch with me, the party or the Government at any time," he said.

UBP candidate Mr. Richards was disappointed by the outcome.

"I don't think we did too badly but second doesn't count in a democracy," he said.

He explained that his business and family always came first and that he would now turn his focus to them.

"This is a bigger loss for the country than it is for me.

"I have my life outside of politics. It was not a personal tragedy," said the former UBP senator and Telecommunications Minister.
