President of the Hamilton Lions Club Sandy Mitchell raised more than than $11,000 for people with impaired vision by walking the length of the Island on Saturday.

Mr. Mitchell, who was born with cerebral palsy, set off at 6.10 am from St. George's and got to Dockyard at 5.45 p.m.

He said: “I feel elated. I am very glad I did it but I won't do it again.” Mr. Mitchell, 58, said he slept for 12 hours straight after the walk and was planning an early night on Sunday. But apart from two corns, picked up in practice walks, he said he wasn't any the worse for wear. He said: “I believe I could have done it quicker if my feet hadn't been bothering me.”

The money Mr. Mitchell raised will go to Bermuda Society for the Blind and the Lions and Lioness Sight Conservation Fund which assists about 100 people every year with glasses, eye operations and examinations. Mr. Mitchell, an accomplished paralympian, is founder of WindReach Recreational Village.
