Danger of stigmas
Mr. Terrence Gorski hailed the Drug Treatment Courts and said: The belief that people become addicted because they are bad people and then the belief that addiction is caught up with sin and repentance has fuelled a negative stigma against alcoholism and drug dependency in the United States.
This has led to substance abusers not seeking help sooner.
By getting as many people into recovery treatments as possible minimises the number of addicts in prison.
Prison itself damages people and they tend to leave prison with more problems than they had when they went in.
But if a person is in prison the second the goal of the Department of Corrections is to realise that most people who are put in prison for drug related crimes will eventually get released and two thirds in the US right now, commit a new crime within three to five years, which says the system isn?t working very well.
In the US they are beginning to open behind the bars programmes or rehabilitation programmes and they are looking at minimum security rehabilitation programmes.
They are also dealing with programmes for pregnant women where they are put into a family oriented rehabilitation programme where they and their baby can stay for six months to a year.
