Bennett faces new charge

NEW YORK (Bloomberg) ?Federal prosecutors in New York yesterday added a new charge to a pending criminal indictment against former Refco Inc. chief executive officer Phillip Bennett, accusing him of lying to the company?s auditors.

Bennett already faced an 11-count indictment that accused him of defrauding investors.

Prosecutors say Bennett, 58, hid hundreds of millions of dollars owed to now-bankrupt Refco by a company he controlled. Bennett faces a March trial on the fraud charges.

Robert Trosten, the former chief financial officer, has also been charged. Yesterday?s superseding indictment doesn?t add any new charges against him. The new indictment adds some details about the alleged conspiracy.
