Coast Guard rescues captain

A harbour radio spokesman yesterday said the bulk carrier Doric Shield was 375 miles southeast of Bermuda when her captain suffered a stroke.
The vessel then diverted to Bermuda as the US Coast Guard scrambled two C130 rescue planes and an H60 helicopter to intercept Doric Shield .
Four emergency medical technicians dropped from one of the planes and were plucked from the ocean by a small boat from the ship.
They then stabilised the captain's condition.
Meanwhile, the second emergency plane and helicopter flew to Bermuda to re-fuel before lifting the stricken captain and medical crew off the ship's deck.
The captain was then flown back to the Island and was yesterday in the King Edward VII Memorial Hospital undergoing treatment.
DEAD MAN FOUND OBT Dead man found An autopsy will be performed on a man found dead at Victoria Park lavatory yesterday afternoon by a Corporation of Hamilton worker.
The man -- whose particulars were not released by Police pending notification of his next of kin -- was found in a collapsed state around 2.30 p.m.
A Police spokesman said the circumstances of the man's death are not thought to be suspicious.
POLICE KEPT BUSY CRM Police kept busy Police are investigating several breaking and entries and thefts which occurred during the Easter weekend.
A Pembroke home on Fort Hamilton Drive was unlawfully entered on Sunday. A black and pink men's Trek pedal cycle and a Sony VHS video recorder valued at $500 were stolen.
Police said the thief gained entry by removing a glass pane door of the studio apartment.
Also on Sunday on Queen Street in Hamilton, a brown leather wallet containing credit cards, $30 in cash and a driver's licence was stolen from an unattended and insecure parked car.
On Middle Road in Southampton a school nursery was unlawfully entered. The culprit gained entry by forcing open a screen to an insecure window. Nothing appeared to have been stolen.
A private home on Kitchener Close in Sandys Parish was also illegally entered.
Again, nothing was reported stolen.
And a visiting American sailor told Marine Police a United States flag was stolen from the rear of his yacht while it was docked in St. George's Harbour over the weekend.
NEW SCHEDULE BEGINS FLY New schedule begins Bermuda's only direct air carrier to the UK began its fourth weekly service last Friday and will launch its summer schedule today.
British Airways' schedule, which will run until October 28, will see flights depart from London at 2.25 p.m. and arrive in Bermuda at 5.45 p.m. on Tuesdays, Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays.
The plane will turn around and leave the Island at 7.40 p.m. Check in time will begin at 5 p.m.
TRIAL STARTS TODAY MUR CTS Trial starts today The manslaughter trial of a restaurant manager accused of killing a customer starts in Supreme Court today.
Englishman Kevin James Pollock, of West Crescent, Warwick, is accused of unlawfully killing Craig McGavern at Flanagan's on Front Street last July.
Pollock, 36, appeared in court yesterday and pleaded not guilty. But Crown counsel Patrick Doherty and defence lawyer Mark Pettingill asked for the trial to be put back a day.
Acting Chief Justice Norma Wade-Miller supervised the selection of an eight-man, four-woman jury.
And Mr. Doherty told the court the hearing would last about two weeks.
Mr. Pettingill said the case was "convoluted'', saying 14 witnesses would be called.
