The Saltus Class of 2021 started a new chapter in their lives last week after they celebrated their high school graduation.

The 44 youngsters met at the school’s Pembroke campus on Thursday for a ceremony joined by school staff and their family members.

Yiwone Darrell, a head prefect, thanked the school for its support as his class completed their studies during the Covid-19 pandemic.

He added: “While saying ‘thank you’ is great, I think my aunt would say ‘actions speak louder than words’.

“The best way for us to show our gratitude to these great individuals is to follow our dreams, don’t give in when things get difficult and to keep them in mind.”

Koa Godchild, another head prefect, added: “As we leave here today and venture off into whatever path we choose, never forget the memories and experiences that have shaped us into the diligent, ambitious and genuine people we have become.”

Kathleen Brown, who started Saltus at the Foundation Year, was named Valedictorian and received prizes for her performance in biology, English literature, mathematics and philosophy and ethics. She is expected to attend McGill University in Canada.

Another 18 pupils received prizes for their performances in subjects such as design technology and computing.

Deryn Lavell, the head of school, commended the pupils for their courage and perseverance during their time at Saltus.

She said: “I have a feeling that this experience will help you always adapt quickly to change and put you in a position where innovation and flexibility will be second nature.”
