Conor White takes full advantage of Dominique Mayho slip to capture Gnosis Criterium
Dominique Mayho suffered heartbreak during Sunday’s Gnosis Criterium in the City of Hamilton.
The multiple Sinclair Packwood Memorial Race champion led the field on the final sprint to finish with victory well within grasp when disaster struck.
The chain on Mayho’s bike popped off its sprocket, rendering the experienced cyclist powerless the rest of the way, as he was overtaken by Conor White and Alexander Miller.
Seizing his moment, White then held off the charging Miller to clinch Category A honours by a whisker in a close finish, with Mayho ranging across the line in third to round off the podium.
White, Miller, Mayho and Nicholas Pilgrim were among the front pack throughout the race where the lead changed hands on multiple occasions as they mounted a series of attacks.
The battle for honours in the Category B race also went down to the wire in a sprint finish.
Darren Glasford led the field across the line followed by McQuinn Burch and Wouter Aarts in second and third respectively.
Road running legend Kavin Smith captured the Category C title, with Shannon Jennings finishing second and Ricky Smith third.
Jasmin Hasselkuss reigned supreme in the women’s race with Liana Medeiros taking second followed by Anabelle Miller in third.
Sunday’s event also featured the island’s youth cyclists who competed among two separate age groups.
Jake Smith won the 13-14 youth title with Gordon Smith and Jackson Langley crossing in second and third respectively.
Zach Moniz captured the junior 12 and under title by a comfortable margin. Makao Butterfield took second with Jeon Wolfe crossing in third to complete the podium.
