Flora Duffy’s gold puts Bermuda on top of the world

As the curtain came down on the Olympic Games on Sunday; Bermuda can rightfully argue to have enjoyed the most successful campaign among the competing nations.

While Flora Duffy’s historic gold medal in the women’s triathlon put Bermuda in 63rd in the final Olympic medal rankings, if you gauged that success in gold medals per population, the island is top of the podium once again.

The island’s final medal count stood at one per roughly 64,000 people, the second-highest per capita behind San Marino, which claimed three medals in total — or one per 11,310 people.

However, the highest gold-medal-per-capita ratio, went to Bermuda, ahead of the Bahamas, averaging one gold per 196,622 people, and New Zealand, completing the “podium” with one gold per 688,890 people.

At the other end of the scale, Indonesia had one gold medal and a population of more than 273 million people, while India has one medal to show for every 276 million people.
