Olympian Dawnnette Bobb to act as team manager for daughter Caitlyn at Under-20 Worlds
Dawnnette Bobb, a former Bermuda Olympic sprinter, has been chosen to be daughter Caitlyn’s team manager and coach at the World Athletics Under-20 Championships next week in Nairobi, Kenya.
Caitlyn Bobb, a sprinter also, will be the island’s lone representative at the championships, which run from August 17 to 22.
The Bobbs, who reside in the United States, will leave for Kenya on Saturday, arriving the next day before preparing for competition at the Nyayo Sports Complex.
Bobb will be competing in the 400 metres where she met the qualifying standard of 54.85sec in June with a time of 53.73, which enabled her to win the event at the Maryland State High School Championships on her way to achieving a rare sprint treble — accompanied by successes over 100 metres and 200 metres.
She was also agonisingly close to qualifying in the 200, with her time of 24.37 falling just two hundredths of a second off the 24.35 standard.
Bobb, who ran a 53.64 400 at the Bermuda Track and Field Championships on July 10 to enhance her status at under-20 level, has a personal best of 52.79 that was set in June 2019.
Her mother, the former Dawnnette Douglas, represented Bermuda at the 1992 Olympics in Barcelona, where she placed sixth in her 100 metres heat in 12.05 and sixth in the 200 heat in 25.03. She ws a senior at the University of Maryland at the time, majoring in physical education.
Daughter Caitlyn will see action in the first-round heats next Wednesday at 3am Bermuda time. The semi-finals are scheduled for the next day at 10.45am and the final on August 20 at 11.20am.
Because of Covid-19 guidelines, there will be no spectators in attendance at the championships, which, like the Tokyo 2020, have been delayed by a year because of the global pandemic.
“We look forward to Caitlyn competing and wish her much success,“ said Donna Raynor, the president of the Bermuda National Athletics Association.
