Tougher public safety measures are expected to be announced today after 52 new cases of the coronavirus were announced last night.

Kim Wilson, the health minister, confirmed that the Cabinet met yesterday to consider changes to the regulations “given the increasing cases and positivity rates”.

Ms Wilson warned that the increase risked turning into “a fourth wave” unless the public stuck to safety rules.

She added: “The changes will be announced tomorrow and will come into effect on Friday.

The number of coronavirus cases stands at 113 after the 52 cases were logged.

There have been 31 recoveries since the last update.

The positives were among 12,615 tests carried out between last Wednesday and last Sunday.

There were 22 cases classed as on-island transmission with known contacts and 21 cases came in from overseas, mostly from US flights and nine of the new cases are under investigation. Of all active cases, 16 are under investigation.

One victim is in intensive care and the rest are being monitored by public health officials.

Of the local and under investigation cases, 18 of 25 per cent were fully vaccinated and 53 or 75 per cent were not vaccinated.

Of the imported cases, 29 or 69 per cent were fully vaccinated, and 13 or 31 per cent were not vaccinated.

Ninety-six of the 113 active cases were the virulent Delta variant, while 13 could not be determined, and four were described as not available.

A statement released by the health department last night also showed vaccination rates continued to rise at a slow rate.

The number of people who have had two jabs stands at 64.6 per cent – an increase of just 0.5 per cent from two weeks ago.

Ms Wilson said: “Everyone needs to follow public health guidelines, and please do not let your guard down.

“We are still experiencing an increase in cases, and without following the safety precautions we all know – wearing a mask, practising good hand hygiene and keeping physically distanced from those not in our household – this current outbreak can grow to a fourth wave.

“We all have the power to prevent that by getting back to basics.”

Ms Wilson said the vaccine clinic at the King Edward VII Memorial Hospital will be open for appointments and walk-ins on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 4pm to 7pm, and on Saturdays from 8am to 4pm.
