Sebastian Kempe finishes commendable fourth at British Laser Radial Nationals
Sebastian Kempe achieved an impressive treble at the UKLA National Championships that concluded in Weymouth, England, yesterday.
The sailor topped the under-17 and under-19 age groups and was third among the male competitors and fourth overall in the 123-strong Laser Radial fleet.
Kempe was ninth and fourth in the final two races competing in the Gold fleet, which left him ten points shy of the third and final spot on the overall podium.
“It was a little bit disappointing for me,” he told The Royal Gazette. “It was a tough day out on the water.
“All in all a good event, but slightly disappointed.”
Also doing Bermuda sailing proud at the regatta, hosted by the Weymouth and Portland National Sailing Academy, was Adriana Penruddocke.
She placed third among the women sailors in the under-21 age group, sixth overall among the women competitors and fourteenth in the overall fleet on her debut at the event, where she also competed in the Laser Radial.
“Finishing 14 of 123 feels really good considering this is one of my first regattas back since Covid first hit and everything had to stop,” said Penruddocke, who was seventh and ninth in the final two races in the Gold fleet.
“Overall, I sailed really well against the top group, so I am very proud of that.
“Also my speed against the top is one of the best and that comes down to time in the boat both on my own and in a group with faster sailors.
“A really good regatta and I am excited for the next to come.”
Britain’s Daisy Collingridge won the championships and was also first among the women sailors. To complete a British sweep of the podium, Jon Emmett was second and Ben Elvin third.
