This one’s on you, former Junior Minister of Finance

Dear Sir,

David Burt, the Premier (Photograph by Akil Simmons)

I read with interest your front-page article entitled “Premier says audit logjam being reduced” (August 14, 2021). Of all the unfortunate examples for the Premier to use, as a way of deflecting responsibility for the administrative mess, he is credited with the following: “.... the National Sports Centre and the Bermuda Land Development Company’s backlogs dated back to 2012, when the One Bermuda Alliance was in power”.

The Premier’s penchant for memory of convenience as well as denial of the history of his own party record may well be at play here. It is true that the former government was elected in 2012 — December 17 to be exact. To say that the OBA “was in power”, albeit for 13 days, could hardly make it accountable for all of 2012.

No. Sorry. But, as the Junior Minister of Finance during the bulk of 2012, he would be more qualified to answer such interrogatories from the Auditor-General.

Context is indeed important; no argument here.
