The First Division Twenty20 title race heated up at the weekend after Warwick recorded a comfortable win over Devonshire Rec to move level on points with leaders Western Stars, who were idle.

Warwick beat hosts Devonshire by 99 runs at Devonshire Recreation Club on Sunday thanks to a Dominic Sabir century and Corey Burgess’s four-wicket haul.

Sabir hammered 116 from 56 balls in 85 minutes with nine fours and as many sixes.

The opening batsman reached his fifty off 26 balls and his hundred off 49.

Staphen Dill, the captain, and Torleair Caines both chipped in with 27 while Burgess added 17 as Warwick scored 217 for five after winning the toss and electing to bat.

Chris Dailey, who dismissed Sabir, was the pick of the Devonshire bowling with two for 31.

Burgess was introduced into the Warwick attack at the start of the tenth over with Devonshire 51 for one and took only five balls to open his wicket tally after bowling Koshun Simmons.

He then claimed the scalps of Tarik Jennings and Dailey in his second over and Aljame Zuill, the wicketkeeper, in his third to finish with four for eight from three overs.

Opener Jennings and Dion Ball, the captain, led the Devonshire batting with 23 each.

Stars, who had a bye, held a ten-point advantage at the top of the standings over second-placed Warwick heading into last weekend’s round of matches.

Elsewhere at Somerset Cricket Club, Cleveland thrashed PHC by 149 runs in a lopsided affair.

Opening batsman Zeri Tomlinson struck an unbeaten 87 from 67 balls and Steven Bremar, the captain, an unbeaten 51 from 22 as Cleveland posted 179 for two after winning the toss and electing to bat.

Tybrae Robinson then claimed six for 23 and new-ball partner Jelani Richardson two for six as PHC were skittled for 30 in 6.5 overs.

Darrien Gibbons was PHC’s top scorer with 20.

Sunday’s remaining First Division Twenty20 saw visiting Somerset Bridge beat Flatts by six wickets at Sea Breeze Oval.

Kareem Hollis (two for 21) and Noel Woods (two for 27) led the Bridge bowling, as Flatts posted 105 for nine after winning the toss and opting to bat.

Nelson Bascome was the top Flatts batsman with 18.

Jason Smith led the Bridge run chase, stroking an unbeaten 41 from 34 balls, while Clarence Trott chipped in with 28.

Smith featured in a match-winning, 40-run partnership with Joshua Gilbert (10) that carried Bridge safely across the line with 21 balls to spare.

Regino Smith took two for 17 for Flatts.
