The Bermuda men’s tenpin bowling team remained on course to achieve one of their primary objectives at the Central American and Caribbean Bowling Confederation Championships in Guatemala yesterday.

After two days of competition in Guatemala City, the island’s team comprising Lamar Richardson, Dennis Joell, Rickai Binns, David Maycock, Carl Reid and Damien Matthews were eighth among the 13 countries competing at the event.

The top ten teams will qualify for the 2022 CAC Games in El Salvador, which Bermuda’s bowlers are aiming for along with a spot on the podium in the team event to be held over the weekend.

“The team’s objective is to first qualify for the CAC Games and to medal in the prestigious team events, which is our strongest event,” Steven Riley, the Bermuda manager, told The Royal Gazette.

Competition began on Tuesday with the men’s singles and doubles events, which involved the entire contingent.

Maycock, with a five-game set of 1,021, finished 29th among the 59-strong field in the singles. He was followed by Joell in 36th with 996, Matthews (932) in 48th, Richardson (911) in 52nd, Binns (843) in 55th, and Reid (737) in 58th.

Maycock then teamed up with Joell for the doubles event where they placed eleventh with a score of 2,085.

Matthews and Richardson finished nineteenth with 1,963, while Reid and Binns were 29th with 1,713.

Yesterday saw Reid, Richardson and Binns compete in the men’s threesome event, where they were shown in eighth in the standings with 1,110.

Maycock, Matthews and Joell are also scheduled to compete in the men’s threesome event when it resumes today.

Riley is encouraged to see the island’s bowlers steadily gaining momentum on the lanes.

“The team had a slow start but have gotten better as the tournament has gone on,” he said.

The bowlers are also being accompanied in Guatemala by coach Fero Williams, of the United States.
