Dog owners were today warned to get their pets vaccinated against the deadly parvovirus.

A spokesman for the Ministry of Home Affairs said a special clinic will be held at the Fairmont Southampton between 9am and 1pm on Sunday where dogs can get the jab for $25.

It is the second clinic - the first was held at the Bull’s Head car park in August when 154 dogs were vaccinated.

The spokesman added: “The purpose of these clinics is to vaccinate as many unvaccinated dogs and puppies as possible to stem the current parvovirus outbreak.

“This clinic will be arranged as a drive-through. Following registration, a very cursory examination will ensure the animal is fit to be vaccinated.

“Following this, the dog will get vaccinated, and the owner will be on their way.”

He added that the owners of all unvaccinated dogs and puppies – legal or illegal, licensed or unlicensed – should take advantage of the pop-up clinic.

The spokesman warned that the vaccine was only useful for prevention, not treatment, of animals.

He said: “It is vital that no dog experiencing vomiting, diarrhoea, lethargy, or pregnant dogs, be brought to the vaccine clinics.

“Dog owners should instead seek guidance from a veterinary professional of their choice.”

The spokesman added that no other veterinary matters would be discussed at the clinic and owners with worries should take their pet to a vet.

He added the ministry was grateful to the volunteers who organised the clinics.
