Covid checks – all compliant, say police

Dozens of bars, sports clubs and restaurants were in line with Covid-19 regulations when they were visited by police last weekend.

A police spokesman said that 61 compliance checks were carried out across the island by regular and reserve officers from September 10 to 13.

He added: “All were compliant.”

David Burt, the Premier, said last week in the House of Assembly that large groups with exemptions should expect to be visited to make sure they were sticking to the rules.

He added: “Licensed premises and indoor bars and restaurants can expect the same.

“The enforcement will be broad, and my expectation is also that it will be fair.

“This is the only way that we will ease the growing pressure on the various elements of our healthcare system, which are stretched and stressed.”

A Government spokesman said that fixed penalties of $500 could be handed out for breaches of public health regulations.

He added: “The regulations require mask-wearing indoors and in certain outdoor settings as per mask-wearing guidance.

“SafeKey has been proven an effective means of hosting safe events, but it too must be used properly.”

He reminded the managers of licensed premises that SafeKey could only be used with identification.

The spokesman added: “All aspects of the public health regulations are designed to keep the community safe and where these regulations are followed, we can continue to adjust and not interrupt our lives.

“Those establishments and venues that are following the rules have contributed to the return of economic activity and psychological wellbeing for the island.”
