Young people are to be brought together in an effort to combat climate change.

The Bermuda Underwater Exploration Institute has organised its first Youth Climate Summit, scheduled to take place online between November 22 and 27.

The BUEI said it was hoped the conference would be a “foundation for a year of youth-lead sustainability, conservation and climate justice initiatives”.

The summit will feature a series of online sessions designed to explain the science behind climate change, the potential impacts, what campaigns could accomplish and what individual action could achieve.

Karla Lacey, the BUEI chief executive officer, said the event was intended to give participants the chance to work together, develop informed opinions and create an action plan.

Ms Lacey said: “While the pandemic has the attention of every nation on earth, the impact of climate change continues to jockey for headline position.

“Record-breaking fires, stronger hurricanes and severe droughts are altering the earth’s landscape while warming sea waters, rising tides and expanding flood zones are displacing communities.

“As each new environmental disaster unfolds, the call to address the human impact on the environment grows louder.”

Ms Lacey added: “The voices of young people around the world demanding climate action are now the loudest and impossible to ignore.”

She said the summit would also introduce participants to island environmental protection organisations.

Ms Lacey said: “By identifying potential resources and collaboration opportunities, attendees’ action plans may fill in gaps or provide additional volunteer support on projects already under way.”
