The coronavirus is spreading faster in Bermuda than anywhere else in the world, statistics have shown.

The New York Times put the island at the top of a global chart that listed the increase in cases over the last seven days.

The newspaper said Bermuda averaged 86 new cases every day last week - September 6 to last Sunday - a rate of 135 per every 100,000 people.

Grenada came second with an average of 127 new cases per 100,000 people recorded each day last week.

Dominica was third, Mongolia was fourth and Israel was fifth in the survey.

But the chart showed that Bermuda had the lowest death rate among the top ten countries and also the highest vaccination rate.

There are 1,083 active coronavirus infections on the island.

One in 59 people are at present infected and the Government estimated about 10,000 people were quarantined.
