Ne-Jai Tucker hopes his maiden goal in Premier League 2 is the first of “many more to come“.

The Bermudian winger officially opened his league account to help guide Burnley’s under-23s to their first win of the season in the second division on Sunday.

Goals either side of the half from substitute Sam Unwin and Tucker earned the visiting side a comfortable 2-0 win away to Southampton at St Mary’s Stadium.

Tucker curled in a late second-half free kick from the edge of the area to make the points safe after Unwin’s strike in first-half stoppage time earned Burnley the lead at the break.

“It was my first goal in the league and it’s always great to contribute with a goal to help the team,” Tucker told The Royal Gazette.

“It was good to get on the scoresheet after a tough start. Hopefully many more to come and I just want to keep getting better each game.”

The Bermuda youth international says he and his team-mates are now keen to build on their first win of the season.

“It was good to get three points away from home and secure our first win of the season,” Tucker added. “It’s been deserved and we are looking to kick on from there following up with more wins.”

Burnley gained a numerical advantage after Southampton goalkeeper Harry Lewis was sent off for denying forward Joe McGlynn a clear goalscoring opportunity.

Things then went to go from bad to worse for the home side as Unwin pounced to put the visitors ahead just before the break.

The striker found himself in space in the box and glanced a looping header over Southampton’s substitute goalkeeper, Ollie Wright.

Burnley squandered a golden opportunity to double their lead on the hour mark when forward Max Thompson had a penalty saved after Unwin was brought down in the box.

Tucker then sealed the deal from a clinically executed set-piece with 25 minutes remaining after the visitors had weathered a period of pressure from their hosts.

Defender Owen Dodgson was dragged down on the edge of the area and Tucker curled the resulting free kick around the wall into the far bottom corner of the net.

The result moved Burnley up to eleventh in the 14-team second division on four points from five matches. Southampton remain bottom with a solitary point.
