Ten more Covid deaths, minister says people are dying at home
Another ten people have died of Covid-19, the health minister announced last night.
The news brought the death toll to 62 and there were 163 new cases.
Since the last update, there have been also been 295 recoveries, reducing the number of active cases from Friday’s record 1,612 to 1,470.
On Thursday and Friday, the number of new cases also fell to 79 and 51 respectively and the positivity rate - the percentage of cases testing positive of all the tests taken that day - fell to 3.2 per cent and 3.1 percent from 3.8 per cent.
Kim Wilson said that people with serious symptoms were putting off going to the King Edward VII Memorial Hospital.
She said: “This can be too late and some people are dying at home.”
She told the public: “I urge everyone once you have tested positive, please consult your doctor.
“Get guidance from them, so if you need medical intervention, you can get it as soon as possible.”
Ms Wilson added that members of the public had attempted to treat themselves with home remedies they found on WhatsApp chat groups and through social-media posts.
But she warned: “These substances and home remedies do not work.
“They are potentially dangerous and should not be taken without consulting a qualified medical professional.”
There are 66 people in hospital, ten of them in intensive care.
Five of the new cases were in people with a history of travel in the previous 14 days.
The other 158 new cases were classified as on-island transmission or under investigation.
There have been 295 recoveries since the last update.
There have been 20 new admissions to hospital and 11 patients have been discharged.
Ms Wilson added that almost 90 per cent of coronavirus-related deaths were among those who had not been vaccinated against Covid-19.
She said: “Reports also show that people who have been vaccinated and test positive for Covid-19 experience less severe symptoms and recover faster.“
Since the last update, there have been 295 recoveries and ten deaths.

• 66 are in hospital, with 10 in intensive care
Since the last public report on Friday:
• There were 20 new Covid admissions in the hospital
• There were 11 Covid discharges from the hospital
Since March 2020, Bermuda has recorded 5,145 confirmed coronavirus cases, out of which 3,613 have recovered, and 62 Covid related deaths.
The source of all active cases is as follows:
• 66 are Imported
• 319 are classified as local transmission of which:
– 319 are local transmission with known contact/source and
– 0 are local transmission with an unknown contact/source
• 1,085 are under investigation
Active cases by vaccination status, transmission, and type:
• Imported cases: 89 per cent are fully vaccinated, and 11 per cent are not vaccinated
• Local/under investigation cases: 23 per cent are fully vaccinated, and 77 per cent are not vaccinated
• Variant typing is not available at this time due to the prioritisation of test results.
The source of all confirmed cases is as follows:

● 2,977 are classified as local transmission of which:
– 2,393 are local transmission with known contact/source and
– 584 are local transmission with an unknown contact/source
● 1,085 are under Investigation
Ms Wilson added: “Anyone who does not have a GP can call the hospital and speak with a medical professional who will let them know what they should do given their symptoms, medications and any underlying conditions.”
