Another ten people die from Covid – total now 72, 38 deaths in September alone
Ten more people have died from Covid-19, the health minister announced last night, bringing the island’s death toll to 72.
It brings the number of deaths this month alone to 38.
Kim Wilson gave “heartfelt condolences” as she revealed a further 99 people had tested positive for coronavirus in the latest results, bringing a test positivity rate of 2.7 per cent – up from 2.5 per cent on Monday.
But total active cases of the illness have fallen, from 1,470 in the last update to 1,453.
Hospital cases have fallen from 66 to 61, with 11 patients in intensive care – a slight increase from ten in the last report.
Six of the island’s new cases are classified as coming from overseas.
The rest are classed as either local transmission or remain under investigation.
There have been 106 recoveries since Monday and King Edward VII Memorial Hospital has admitted 13 cases and discharged 11 people.
Of active cases, 90 per cent of imported cases were fully vaccinated – but of the local or under investigation cases, 80 per cent were not vaccinated.
Variant typing was not available, however, Ms Wilson did acknowledge that the Delta strain was “spreading fast”.
To date, 68.3 per cent of the population has been vaccinated with one dose, and 66.5 per cent with both doses.
Since January 11, Bermuda has administered 87,215 jabs, with 82.7 per cent of residents over age 65 fully immunised.
The island has had 5,244 coronavirus cases since March 2020.
Out of our present active cases, 67 are imported from overseas.
There are 304 classes as cases of local transmission – all of which have known contacts.
There are now 1,082 cases under investigation by health officials.
Ms Wilson said anyone with the illness who was at home should have someone check on them daily, but to avoid face to face encounters.
People with a high temperature should get plenty of fluids and treat discomfort with the over-the-counter drugs paracetamol or ibuprofen.
Those suffering coughs should avoid lying on their back.
She added: “Lie on your side or sit upright instead. To help ease a cough, try having a teaspoon of honey. But do not give honey to babies under 12 months.”
Sick people should remain at home rather than visiting the pharmacy.
Ms Wilson urged people with the illness to contact their doctor for guidance.
Those without doctors can call the hospital at 239-2009 for information on treatment.
She called on “everyone to please do everything you can to protect you and your family from the virus.”
“The Delta variant is spreading fast, causing more infections in our community.
“I urge those who have not been vaccinated to do so now.
“The Covid-19 vaccines work to prevent severe illness, which may be fatal.”
