Jonté Smith scores first goal for new club
Jonté Smith broke a personal scoring drought when he came off the bench to net the winner as Ballymena United beat Dungannon Swifts 4-3 in the Danske Bank Premiership on Tuesday night.
It was the Bermuda striker’s first goal for his new club, ending a poor run in front of goal that enveloped a fruitless spell last season at Woking in the Vanarama National League in England.
Ballymena twice came from two goals down, with Smith scoring the winner in the 74th minute goal after coming on as a half-time substitute with Ballymena trailing 2-0.
The Swifts scored in the 28th, 40th and 56th minutes through Ethan McGee, Joe McCready and Rhyss Cambell while Christopher (49th), Caolan Loughran (61st) and Leroy Millar in the 66th minute replied for the home team before Smith’s late winner. The win moves them up to ninth in the 12-team table.
Meanwhile, Nahki Wells returned to the Bristol City bench as an unused substitute as City suffered their first defeat in six games when they went down 1-0 to Millwall in southeast London last night.
Wells, who played the entire match against Fulham on the weekend, his first start of the season, was back among the substitutes as City lost to a second-half penalty by Jed Wallace in the 64th minute.
Robert Atkinson conceded the penalty with a bad foul on Benik Afobe, which earned him a booking as Wallace, on as a sub in the 60th minute stepped up to convert the penalty to secure all three points for Millwall.
Bristol City dropped to tenth in the standings behind Queens Park Rangers and Luton, who both won their midweek matches. It was only a second win of the season for Millwall, along with six draws in ten games, as they climbed to fourteenth in the tables, just a point behind City.
Curtis Fleming, the assistant manager, took control of the City team after manager Nigel Pearson had a positive test for Covid-19 this week. The manager is self-isolating for ten days.
Fleming will also be in charge of the team for the league match away to Peterborough United on Saturday.
Pearson has not had any sustained close contact with the playing squad since last Saturday. No player or other staff member has been affected.
